About

We have spent several hours surfing the net looking for sites with information about Hughes Corn Flower glassware. We have tried almost every search engine and tried numerous combinations of keywords, yet we have found virtually no references at all.

This site hopefully will be a starting point for other collectors and then maybe we will all be able to help each other in exchanging information and referring each other to new sites.

The information on this site is as accurate as we know, but most of the information has come to us through word of mouth, so there are bound to be some mistakes. If you find any inaccurate information or have anything to add, please email me at brian@hughescornflower.com.

I am Brian Wing, and my wife is Marsha. We live in St. Catharines, Ontario, which is about 20 kilometres west of Niagara Falls. We have 6 kids (4 girls and 2 boys). Jeff, the oldest, lives in Miami with his wife Evelyn, son Ryan, and daughters Lillian (Lillie) and Lauren. Alisa lives and works in Toronto with her husband Jason. Graham and his wife Lisa live here in St. Catharines with their son Andrew and another one on the way. Julia is a hygienist for a local orthodonist and lives on her own. Andrea works full-time and still lives at home. Brianna is a high school student, still without a job.Marsha’s mother had a fair amount of Corn Flower and on her mother’s death, Marsha inherited a number of pieces. As a child, she had always loved it, and decided she wanted to expand the collection she now found herself with. Marsha was bitten by the “antique” bug. After a couple of years of taking me with her, the roles soon reversed, and I am now the one dragging her out to antique shows, sales, and shops.Whatever knowledge we have about Corn Flower, we have collected over the years from various dealers and collectors. Our collection consists of approximately 50 plates, 160 glasses, and 65 other pieces. We understand Hughes’ granddaughter still lives in central Ontario, and is interested in the collectibles of her grand father.

We also collect Royal Doulton figurines, blue Fire King bakeware, Iris Depression glass, and old enamelware. Most recently I have been collecting old canning jars. Marsha has also finished an old secretary desk/bookcase (well over 100 years old) that belonged to my great-grandfather. It went well and she is now pursuing other projects.

We used to think that Brianna seemed to be the only one that had caught the bug. She recognized authentic Corn Flower and was able to spot the imitations. As she has gotten older, she doesn’t really seem too interested. She does, however, have an extensive collection of over 800 antique clay and glass marbles. When my father (her grandfather) was around, he knew them all by name.

We don’t collect Corn Flower and the other items simply for the monetary value of them, we also like to think of the people who enjoyed and used the antiques we collect today.
